PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
STUDENT HEALTH CENTER
Part-time (20 hrs/wk), *10/12, Probationary/Permanent Position
$2340 - $3743 per month
(Hiring is usually below the midpoint of the salary range.)

The California Maritime Academy, a specialized campus of the California State University (CSU) system serving a full-time student population of approximately 800, offers undergraduate degrees in Business Administration, Facilities Engineering Technology, Global and Maritime Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering Technology, and Marine Transportation. LOCATION: The campus is located in Vallejo on the north shore of the Carquinez Strait at the northeastern extreme of the San Pablo Bay. Nestled among the hills adjacent to the beautiful waters of the Bay, the Academy is 30 miles northeast of San Francisco on I-80.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Medical Director, the responsibilities of the Physician Assistant include:
Provide direct clinical patient care, make diagnostic evaluation, prescribe and administer medical treatment and follow-up to insure proper resolution of illness; perform physical examinations, including ordering, interpreting and evaluating diagnostic test results, consult with CMA Medical Director and/or private physicians and consultants as needed; consult with on campus and off-campus psychologists as needed in cases with mental health problems; prescribe and dispense over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals, perform simple office procedures pertaining to family practice, dermatology, gynecology and family planning, orthopedics and wound care, maintain patient confidentiality, etc.,
Document complete and legible notes using SOAP format for health care plan and prognosis; provide professional consultant services to students, and other professionals; provide direction and leadership for medical assistant/clinical aide in the absence of the Medical Director.
The incumbent will participate in an annual training cruise aboard the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR for a minimum of four weeks as a condition of employment. For the period of the cruise the incumbent’s time base will be full-time. Throughout the cruise, the incumbent will provide medical services similar to those described above for the daily scheduled clinics at sea and in port.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Clinical knowledge and skills to provide a full spectrum of general ambulatory medical care & health education, including GYN/family planning, acute , sub-acute, chronic and minor emergency problems. Ability to analyze urgent and/or emergency situations and take prompt action; knowledge and skills necessary in routine gynecology, family planning, knowledge of contraceptive pharmaceuticals and dispensing, diagnosis and treatment of STI’s, surgical diagnosis and triage, management of mental health problems, and knowledge & skills to provide health education and wellness promotion.
Incumbents must possess the knowledge to work as a licensed Physician Assistant, including subject areas such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance; a thorough knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Physician Assistant; and general knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices.
Incumbents must possess the abilities and clinical competence required to work as a licensed Physician Assistant including, but not limited to, the ability to work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician; demonstrate clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs, and making appropriate referrals; use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools; interpret laboratory and other test results; keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbents scope of practice; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff; be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients; and provide lead work direction to specified health center support staff.
Education and Experience:
Physician Assistants must possess an academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based physician assistant medical training program. Incumbents must possess sufficient experience to independently perform within a scope of practice involving acute and chronic primary health care including family planning.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:
Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of California. Licensing by the Medical Board of California requires passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination.
Must possess and maintain a valid California transmitting number.
Must possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate.
Current ACLS certification or equivalent.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Examination, DOT drug screening, finger printing prior to beginning work
Physical and drug screening required prior to participation in each annual training cruise
Must be able to obtain a USCG Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) issued by the United States Coast Guard
Hospital Emergency Experience preferred
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Must be able to walk from one end of campus to the other.
Must be able to climb steep, narrow staircases and traverse narrow passageways as on the TSGB.
Must be able to work in confined spaces as on the TSGB.
Must be able to maintain balance on a moving deck.
Must be able to open and close water tight doors that may weigh up to 56 lbs.
Must be able to step over 24” door sills on TSGB.
Ability to operate a motorized cart for transport to ship and other campus buildings.
Has regular contact with biohazardous waste material.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Must be able to work in a non-air conditioned office setting.
Must have the ability to use all medical instruments and devices safely.
Must be able to participate in emergency disaster drills on campus.
